South African Embassy in Lisbon Pledge Support for World Hunger Day

The South African Embassy in Lisbon has pledged support for World Hunger Day and have asked others to follow their example.

In a video circulated earlier today Ambassador Mmamokwena Gaoretelelwe ask people to 'Help support people in need and be part of a movement of people who are looking after the most vulnerable in these difficult times.'

The full statement is below:

"Dear South African's in Portugal / Dear Friends,

The Covid-19 situation makes for an anxious time for many members of our community. Especially those who have pre-existing health conditions, have family members in high risk groups or have friends and family in other affected countries.

I know you will all be concerned about your friends and loved ones but it is important that we live up to the values of being supportive and mindful of the world around us. Recently Portugal's main food bank organisation, Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome, reported that with many people losing their jobs or being paid less, the amount of people needing to use the food bank has increased dramatically.

Tomorrow, May 28th, is World Hunger Day and the South African Embassy in Lisbon has joined this appeal and will make personal donations from our staff in support of this cause. We please ask you to join this emergency appeal, asking the public to make donations between the 12st and 31st of May. Donations can be through vouchers on in the supermarket or on the food bank's website.

Help support people in need and be part of a movement of people who are looking after the most vulnerable in these difficult times.

Please give today if you can. We are all in this together.

Obrigada."
